War Story #6
In the early 1980’s, as Northeast Region Manager for Clinical Assays, I traveled frequently with one of the best sales reps I have had the pleasure of coaching. His name was Stu Geboff. Stu’s most important credential for working in New York City was his handicap parking sticker. Stu knew the local culture intimately, as you will see from this interaction.
We had loaned a Berthold Gamma Counter to a potential buyer to evaluate. The lab was in Manhattan and was run by a group from Pakistan. We were called to the lab because the demo instrument “had stopped working.”
We took a look at the instrument and immediately found the problem. The well detectors had literally melted. In addition, the instrument table had disintegrated, and the floor below was fuming!
We asked the tech what the heck was going on. He said that in order to clean the detectors, they had poured concentrated sodium hydroxide into all 12 wells, and left them to “soak” overnight.
Stu asked, “What possessed you to do that!?” The tech said that since the instruction manual was written only in English, French, German and Spanish, that our failure to provide a manual in Pakistani meant that this error was not his fault.
Stu’s response was a classic: “I am Jewish. We know and understand the Muslim faith well. You are under no obligation by your faith to tell me the truth, so you simply lied just now. I do not accept your statement at all, and you now owe us the full price of the instrument you just destroyed.”
I thought an argument was about to ensue. Instead, the tech smiled and said, “It was worth a try.” It took a while but the lab eventually paid for the instrument.
