This category covers reusable glass apparatus for teaching, research and quality control labs. It includes test tubes in light-wall, rimless, side-arm and screw-cap styles (bakelite caps with rubber liners), graduated glass centrifuge tubes with stoppers or screw caps, crystallizing dishes, glass Petri dishes, evaporating basins, calibrated pycnometers, 300 mL B.O.D. bottles, and ground-joint pieces such as Claisen, vacuum, reducing and expansion adapters and stoppers. Larger setups include Soxhlet extraction apparatus, Kjeldahl distillation sets, water-jacketed flasks, distillation apparatus and organic chemistry glassware kits, plus porcelain and plastic spot plates.
Check the glass type first: borosilicate handles heating and temperature changes far better than soda glass. Match ground-joint sizes exactly, such as 24/40 or 29/42, so adapters, stoppers and flasks fit. Compare capacity, dimensions, wall thickness, graduation or calibration, closure type and pack quantity, and confirm the speed rating before using glass tubes in a centrifuge.
A crystallizing dish is a shallow, flat-bottomed glass dish with straight sides. It is used to evaporate solutions so crystals can form, and also as a water or ice bath, a cover dish, or a container for holding small items. Borosilicate dishes can be heated gently, and versions with a spout make pouring easier.
Glass centrifuge tubes are chosen for organic solvents that attack plastics, for work where plastic leachables could interfere, and when tubes will be cleaned and reused. They can break under high forces, so use them only within the speed or g-force rating given by the maker, with properly fitting adapters or cushions in the rotor.
24/40 is a standard taper ground-glass joint size. The first number is the approximate diameter in millimeters at the wide end of the joint, and the second is the length of the ground section in millimeters. Male (cone) and female (socket) joints with the same numbers fit together, and reducing or expansion adapters connect different sizes.
Borosilicate glass has low thermal expansion, so it tolerates heating and rapid temperature changes much better than soda-lime glass and is more resistant to chemical attack. Soda-lime glass costs less and is used for items that are not heated, such as some jars and display pieces. For heating, autoclaving or flame work, choose borosilicate.
