Solutions are used in practically every lab, for a broad range of processes.  Lab Procurement Services carries an extensive collection of products to handle our customers' diverse requirements, including various titrimetric and other wet methods.  Please be sure to visit our pH Buffers category for all of your electrochemistry calibration needs, and our Beakers and Flasks collections to view our offerings of those essential items.

For pH buffers, check the pH value and the temperature it is stated at (most here are specified at 25 °C), the tolerance, and whether the lot is traceable to a reference standard if your quality system requires it. Color-coded buffers, such as red for pH 4, yellow for pH 7 and blue for pH 10, help avoid mix-ups during calibration. Sizes run from 500 mL bottles to 4 L bottles and 10 L and 20 L Cubitainers, so buy a size you will use before the expiration date. Electrode storage solution, offered in several sizes, keeps pH electrodes ready between uses.

Buffers and Solutions: common questions

What is 1,10-phenanthroline used for?

1,10-Phenanthroline is an organic compound that forms an intensely colored orange-red complex with ferrous iron, which is the basis of a common colorimetric method for measuring iron in water and other samples. The iron complex, known as ferroin, is also used as a redox indicator in titrations. It is sold as the monohydrate or anhydrous form, so check which one your method calls for.

How long do pH buffer solutions last once opened?

An unopened buffer is good until the manufacturer's expiration date. Once opened, buffers can change as they absorb carbon dioxide from the air or become contaminated, and alkaline buffers such as pH 10 are affected most. Pour what you need into a clean container, never return used buffer to the bottle, keep it capped, and replace it if calibration results drift.

What is the difference between a buffer and a reagent?

A buffer is a solution that resists changes in pH when small amounts of acid or base are added, usually a weak acid or base mixed with its salt. A reagent is any substance used to cause or measure a chemical reaction. Buffers are a kind of reagent used to hold pH steady in analyses, biological work and instrument calibration.
