When ordering media, decide between prepared and dehydrated forms. Prepared plates (15 x 100 mm, plus 15 x 65 mm contact plates for surface monitoring), tubes and bottled broths save preparation time but have shorter shelf lives and usually need refrigeration, so order quantities you can use before the expiration date. Dehydrated media store longer but must be weighed, prepared and sterilized in house. Look for USP-designated media when your testing follows compendial methods, and pair them with quality control organisms such as ATCC-derived strains in DuoPak format. Sterile plastic inoculating loops come in calibrated volumes such as 10 µl.
A bacterial freezing or preservation kit usually contains cryovials prefilled with a cryoprotective broth, often with porous beads. You add a fresh culture, let the organisms attach to the beads, remove the excess liquid and freeze the vial, typically at -70°C or colder. Later, a single bead can be removed to start a culture without thawing the whole vial. Follow the kit maker's instructions for your organism.
Contact plates are small plates filled so the agar forms a raised, convex surface. They are pressed directly onto flat surfaces such as benches, equipment or gloves to sample microorganisms for environmental monitoring. Media for this use often contain neutralizers, such as lecithin and polysorbate (Tween), to counteract disinfectant residues picked up from the surface.
Dilution blanks are tubes or bottles prefilled with a measured volume of sterile diluent, such as buffered water or peptone water. They are used for serial dilutions of samples before plating or counting, so each step has an accurate, sterile volume without preparing and sterilizing the diluent in house.
Returns are accepted within 30 days by mail, with the customer paying return shipping, but refrigerated or frozen items, sterile items and hazardous items cannot be returned. Most prepared plates and tubes fall into those groups, so check quantities and expiration needs before ordering. Many items ship directly from the manufacturer, so lead times vary by item.
