What are life science or biological reagents?
Biological or life science reagents are the chemicals and biological materials used to prepare, grow, separate or analyze cells, proteins and nucleic acids. Examples include buffers, detergents, salts, proteins such as BSA, enzymes, nucleotides and cofactors, and specially purified water. They are graded by purity and testing, which determines whether they suit routine work or sensitive applications.
What does molecular biology grade mean?
Molecular biology grade generally means the material has been tested for, and found free of detectable, DNase, RNase and often protease activity, so it will not degrade DNA, RNA or proteins in your samples. The exact tests vary by manufacturer, so check the specification sheet or Certificate of Analysis for what was tested and the limits used.
What is a lyophilized reagent?
A lyophilized reagent has been freeze-dried: frozen, then dried under vacuum so the water sublimes. The dry product is usually more stable in storage and shipping than a liquid. Before use it is reconstituted with the volume and type of liquid the manufacturer specifies. After reconstitution, follow the stated storage conditions and shelf life.
