It is highly hygroscopic and must be kept in tightly sealed, air tight containers. Calcium chloride has many uses. Its main use is as a desiccant and deicer. However, calcium chloride also is used as a food additive to add a salty flavor without increasing sodium content, used in medicine to treat hydrofluoric burns, as a sterilization agent for male animals, and as a source for calcium ions.
