Lab Procurement Services provides a wide range of grades of salts to meet the requirements of multiple lab and production applications. Please see our specific sections for ACS, High-Purity, and USP-NF-FCC grade products. For other types, including lab and technical grades, please see below, or contact us for assistance.
Please see our pH Buffers and General Supplies for other essential lab products.
When ordering a salt, check the exact chemical form as well as the name: anhydrous, monohydrate, heptahydrate and other hydrates have different formula weights, so a recipe written for one form needs a recalculation for another. Match the grade to the job, for example ACS or reagent grade for analytical work, USP, NF or FCC for pharmaceutical or food applications, and technical grade for general or industrial use. Note the container (amber glass or poly bottle) for light- or moisture-sensitive salts. Review the SDS before ordering toxic or oxidizing salts such as sodium azide or chromium trioxide.
In chemistry, a salt is an ionic compound made of positively charged ions (cations) and negatively charged ions (anions), such as sodium chloride, potassium iodide or copper sulfate. Salts form when an acid reacts with a base, among other reactions. In the lab they are used to make buffers, standards, culture media and reagent solutions, and as starting materials for synthesis.
An anhydrous salt contains no water of crystallization. A hydrated salt, such as copper sulfate pentahydrate or sodium phosphate dibasic heptahydrate, has a fixed number of water molecules built into each formula unit. The water adds to the formula weight, so you need more grams of the hydrate to get the same number of moles. Use the formula weight on the label when preparing solutions.
ACS grade meets the purity specifications of the American Chemical Society's Reagent Chemicals and is commonly used for analytical work. USP and NF grades meet the United States Pharmacopeia and National Formulary standards for pharmaceutical use, and FCC grade meets the Food Chemicals Codex for food use. Technical grade has no such specification and suits general or industrial work where high purity is not required.
Chemicals can be ordered online, but they ship only to business addresses, and a company name is required at checkout. Volume and quote pricing for larger quantities is available through the Contact Us page. Check the SDS and any storage or handling requirements before ordering, so the receiving area is ready for the material.
