Before ordering equipment, check the electrical requirements: products are listed for specific voltages and frequencies, such as 120V/60Hz or 208-240V, and some need a dedicated circuit. Measure the space you have, including clearance for ventilation and door swing on refrigerators and freezers. Check what the unit needs to run, such as a water feed and replacement cartridges for water purification systems, electrodes and buffers for meters, or rotors and adapters for centrifuges, and confirm that parts and consumables are available for the model. If you work under a quality system, look for data logging, temperature monitoring or GLP features.
Equipment: common questions
What equipment does a biopharmaceutical lab need?
Most biopharmaceutical and life science labs rely on balances, pipettes and dispensers, centrifuges, mixers and shakers, incubators and water baths, laboratory refrigerators and ultralow freezers, pH and conductivity meters, and water purification systems. Cell culture work also needs biological safety cabinets and CO2 incubators. The exact list depends on the processes, sample types and regulatory requirements of the lab.
What is the difference between rpm and g-force on a centrifuge?
Rpm is how many times the rotor turns per minute. G-force, or relative centrifugal force (RCF), is the force actually applied to the sample, and it depends on both speed and rotor radius. Because rotors differ in radius, the same rpm can give different g-forces on different centrifuges, so many protocols specify x g. Most centrifuges can display or convert between the two.
What should I check on electrical equipment before ordering?
Confirm the voltage, frequency and plug type match your outlet; a 208-240V unit will not run on a standard 120V outlet. Check the current draw, since large freezers, chillers and ovens may need a dedicated circuit. Also allow the clearance around the unit that the manufacturer specifies for air flow and service.
How long does lab equipment take to arrive?
