Start with the volume range you work in most often, since a pipette is most accurate in the upper part of its range, and decide between fixed and adjustable volume and between single and multichannel (8-channel for 96-well plates). Electronic pipettes reduce hand strain but need charging stands, so check the stand's voltage and plug. Confirm that the tips you use fit the pipette, and choose an autoclavable model if you need to sterilize it. For bottle-top dispensers and burettes, check the bottle thread size or adapter (such as 28 mm), whether a recirculation valve is included, and that the dispenser materials are compatible with your reagents.

What is liquid handling equipment?
Liquid handling equipment measures and transfers liquids accurately. It includes manual and electronic pipettes and micropipettes, multichannel pipettes, pipette controllers for serological pipettes, bottle-top dispensers, digital burettes for titration, and automated liquid handling workstations. Accessories include tips, charging stands, filters and pipette washers.
What is an adjustable volume pipette?
An adjustable or variable volume pipette lets you set any volume within its range, for example 100 to 1000 µL, by turning a plunger or dial. A fixed volume pipette delivers one preset volume, which reduces setting errors in repeated work. Adjustable pipettes are usually most accurate toward the upper end of their range, so labs often keep several models covering different ranges.
Do I need an automated liquid handler for 96- or 384-well plates?
Automated liquid handlers are robotic workstations that transfer liquid into many wells at once, and they suit labs processing large numbers of plates. For smaller workloads, an 8-channel pipette fills a 96-well plate one column at a time, and a dispenser can fill large numbers of tubes or bottles. Compare your daily plate count, required precision and budget before choosing.
