Dextran 150,000, Powder, is used as an antithrombotic in order to reduce blood viscosity. It is a complex branched glucan that is synthethized by certain lactic acid bacteria from sucrose. Commonly used in microsurgery to decrease the risk of vascular thrombosis, these agents are also used as effective osmotic agents and can treat hypovolemia. In the laboratory, Dextran is used to apply osmotic pressure to biological molecules and can, when applied with a fluorescent molecule, be used to create concentration gradients of diffusible molecules.
